Maldives sea slug paper — striking how many of the species also occur in Japan

Jun 5, 2026 ·

My main gripe with this paper is how small all the photographs are, but setting that aside — there are a lot of photos here, and despite being a Maldives paper, it's striking how many of the species I recognise from Japan.

For instance:

Cratena sp. (rinka-mino-umiushi) is figured, and placed in Cratena (hakusen-mino-umiushi genus) — it used to be treated as a Hibusami-no-umiushi sp.

Body shape is Hibusa-like, but the rhinophores are very different, so moving it out of Hibusami-no-umiushi genus is fine. Cratena itself is a less satisfying landing spot to me, so I expect this assignment to shift again.
