New here? — FAQ for Contributors
What if I can't identify the species?
That's fine. Every submission is identified by the site owner before publication. The submission form also shows an AI species-prediction assist, so you can browse candidates as you upload.
Who can submit photos?
Anyone with a free account — divers, snorkellers, researchers, students.
Which animals can I submit?
All sea slugs in the broad sense — anything within Heterobranchia, including nudibranchs, sea hares, sap-sucking slugs, headshield slugs, and umbrella shells. Flatworms and other commonly confused animals are not accepted. See What we accept for the full list of accepted higher taxa.
What kind of photos do you accept?
A phone snapshot is fine — as long as it's in focus, any camera works. One photo plus the date and locality (sea area and depth) is enough.
Are submitted photos used to train AI?
No. Photos are not shared as AI training data.
Who owns the copyright on submitted photos?
The individual contributor. The site uses photos for publication, our official social media (X / Facebook / Instagram / BlueSky / Threads), and contributions to scientific databases (OBIS / BISMaL), all in line with our privacy policy. We do not resell or transfer photos to third parties.
Will my real name be shown?
You choose a display name (nickname is fine) when you register. Your real name is never required.
