Description

Body oval, of a deep greenish-blue colour all over, studded with minute papillae of a darker tint. Mantle large, covering the foot entirely. Dorsal tentacles (rhinophores) short, lamellated, dark-coloured, paler at the bases. Branchiae consist of seven or eight simple leaflets ranged in a crescentic form, the horns of the crescent pointing forward and embracing a small crescentic area of a paler tint. The under surface of the mantle is paler than the upper and spotted; the foot is brownish below. Recorded length up to about 30 mm.

Distribution

Type locality: rock-pool above low-water mark on Bush Island, entrance to the harbour of Ke-lung (Keelung), North Formosa (Taiwan), 29 May (Collingwood, 1881). Subsequently reported widely across the Indo-West Pacific and central Pacific, including South Africa, Madagascar, Japan and Hawaii.

Etymology

Verbatim from the original description (Collingwood, 1881, p.126):
When at rest, the posterior part of the mantle is drawn in, and the branchiae are seen in profile, looking like a comb stuck in behind, whence its specific name.
The specific epithet pecten is Latin for "comb", referring to the gills appearing as a comb stuck in behind when the mantle is retracted.

Remarks

Originally described as Doris pecten Collingwood, 1881, based on two specimens from a rock-pool at Bush Island, Keelung. Later transferred to Doriopsis; the currently accepted name is Doriopsis pecten (Collingwood, 1881). Some authors have treated this taxon as a synonym of Doriopsis granulosa Pease, 1860; this site follows the current WoRMS treatment.
