Chromodoris annae Bergh, 1877
Description
In life the median dorsum and the midline of the tail are ultramarine blue with a slight reddish tinge, edged in velvet black. The mantle skirt is yellow with a fine white inner and outer line; the foot margin is yellow; the rhinophore clubs and gill plumes are nearly chrome yellow. The dorsum is a fine grey-blue overprinted with very small, closely set grey dots; the flanks bear three black longitudinal bands. In alcohol the central dorsum fades to a pale grey-blue or grey-green retaining the fine dotting. The distinctive fine punctation of C. annae is absent in the otherwise similar C. elisabethina, providing the main external character that separates the two species.Distribution
Type locality: Burias, Philippines. Subsequently confirmed from Indonesian and broader western Indo-Pacific waters; sometimes collected together with Chromodoris elisabethina.Etymology
The specific epithet annae is the Latin singular genitive of the female personal name Anna ("of Anna"). The original describer did not name the dedicatee, so the eponym's subject is not specified in the type description.Remarks
The original spelling Chromodoris Annae capitalises the honorific epithet in 19th-century convention; the current spelling annae follows the ICZN.References
