Description

A small (5–15 mm) sacoglossan. Body and cerata are dark, ranging from black to dark blue-green; the tips of the cerata bear densely packed yellow to orange dots, giving the cerata an overall golden-yellow margin. Dense white dots are clustered just below the orange tips. The rhinophores are almost entirely blue with only the base white; the tail is translucent with scattered blue dots.

Distribution

Widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, with the type material from Australia (Western Australia and Queensland; Jensen 1993). Japanese records include Sagami Bay, the Izu Peninsula, Hachijo Island, and Okinawa.

Etymology

The specific epithet aureomarginatus combines Latin aureo (golden) and marginatus (margined), meaning "having a golden border".

Remarks

A feeder on green algae of the genus Codium. The type material was obtained from Codium cf. perriniae; in Japan, recorded hosts include C. intricatum, C. fragile, C. minus, and C. geppiorum. The species is known to form feeding aggregations.
