Description

A large dendrodorid reaching about 60 mm in length. Body colour highly variable: reddish-brown, yellow-ochre, dark grey, etc. The dorsum is covered with rounded tubercles ranging from yellowish-grey to brown or reddish-brown. Between the tubercles the surface bears scattered blue to pale-blue rounded patches, varying from brilliant peacock-blue to pale blue and numbering from one to several per inter-tubercular space. The mantle border is thin and bears scattered white markings. Rhinophores match the body colour with white tips. Branchial gills also match the body colour, sometimes speckled with fine white dots.

Distribution

Widespread Indo-Pacific: South Africa, Réunion, Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Midway Atoll, and Hawaii.

Etymology

The specific epithet krusensternii honours the Russian explorer and naval officer Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770-1846), commander of the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe.

Remarks

Dendrodoris denisoni (Angas, 1864) and Dendrodoris gunnamatta Allan, 1932 are treated as junior synonyms.
