Description

A small dendrodorid; total length typically 15-30 mm (the type was 8 mm long, Japanese specimens 20-30 mm). The body is elongate-oval with a slightly wavy mantle edge. Ground colour is orange (yellow-red), with numerous distinct black to blackish-brown round spots scattered over the dorsum; spots toward the mantle margin are slightly smaller than those near the centre. The rhinophores are diagnostic: bases brick-red to orange, tips white, with a conspicuous black ring-like band between the white tip and the orange stalk. The branchial gills are five or six in number, orange-red and slightly paler than the body, with black tipping.

Distribution

Type locality: north-western Australia. Widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, with records from Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan.

Etymology

The specific epithet guttata is Latin for "spotted with drops", in reference to the distinct black round spots scattered over the dorsum.
