Description

A tiny gastropterid, 2.5-5 mm in length. The parapodia are large with a parabolic outline, inclined anteriorly, broadest in the anterior half; the head barely protrudes beyond the parapodial front. The dorsal hump is large, ovoid, longer than wide, with a smooth surface and a small knob-like protuberance near the right posterior corner. The free mantle margin is very short and the ctenidium is very small, nearly degenerate. Living animals are uniformly bright chrome yellow with minute white dots; the posterior edge of the cephalic shield, the mid-dorsal crest and the knob-like protuberance are ivory black. They swim actively by flapping the parapodia.

Distribution

Type locality: shallow water of Sagami Bay around Kasazima off Sasima, Japan. Also recorded from the Japan Sea side at Sado Island.

Etymology

The specific epithet flavum is the neuter form of Latin flavus ("yellow"), referring to the bright chrome-yellow body of the living animal.

Remarks

Originally placed in Gastropteron, later transferred to Siphopteron.
