Description

A small to medium-sized polycerid (Tambja) reaching about 20 mm in body length. Ground colour varies widely, from green through yellow-green to vermilion or brown. Some individuals show fine spots or longitudinal lines slightly brighter than the ground.

The oral tentacles, the tips of the rhinophores and gill, and the tip of the tail are blue-purple, a diagnostic feature of the species.

Distribution

Western Pacific. Observation records come mainly from southern Japan. The species inhabits shallow to moderately deep coral and rocky reefs.

Etymology

The specific epithet amakusana is a latinised form of "Amakusa", in reference to the Amakusa region of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, where Baba 1987 collected the type material.

Remarks

The Japanese vernacular name "Komidori-ryūgū-umiushi" was proposed in Nakano & Nishida 2024 "Two new species of Tambja with green colouration from Japan". Pola et al. 2008 briefly assigned this species to Martadoris based on molecular phylogenetics, but subsequent verification has confirmed that Japanese specimens remain within Tambja.
