A medium-sized shelled cephalaspidean reaching several centimetres in shell length. The shell is robustly egg-shaped, decorated with spiral grooves. The shape evokes that of a Japanese chinquapin nut (shii-no-mi), giving rise to the Japanese common name.

Distribution

Originally described from material in the H. Cuming collection. Common on sandy bottoms around Japan.

Etymology

The specific epithet sieboldii honours the German physician and naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold, who studied the flora and fauna of Japan during the late Edo period.
