Description

A small aeolid covered with fine reddish-carmine spots; the body has an overall pinkish-red appearance. The bases of the cerata are red, and the digestive gland within each cerata is reddish-brown. The cerata bear a broad golden-yellow ring near the tip and a vivid blue ring just below it. The rhinophores are long, with white dots scattered along the lower halves and near the tips; the oral tentacles are similarly long and coloured.

Distribution

Recorded in Japan from Honshu south to Okinawa, including Nishidomari (Otsuki, Kochi Prefecture), Toyama Bay, Sagami Bay, the Izu Peninsula, and Okinawa. The morphologically similar species Eubranchus leopoldoi, to which Japanese individuals are tentatively referred, was described from Punta Mona on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, and the conspecificity of Japanese specimens with the Caribbean type material has not yet been confirmed by molecular or anatomical comparison.

Etymology

The specific epithet leopoldoi was given in the original description as a dedication to the Spanish malacologist Leopoldo Moro Abad.
