Description

A medium-sized gastropterid, 8.7-12 mm in length, and the type species of its genus. The dorsal hump is ovoid and bears two pairs of protuberances on the posterior half — the anterior pair much larger than the posterior pair. The left anterior protuberance is bifid (probably two fused protuberances); the right anterior one is the largest of all and forms the posterior part of the free mantle margin. The posterior pair are simple cones. The ctenidium consists of seven plumed leaflets.

In life the animal is iridescent reddish purple overall. The free mantle margin is whitish with an orange border, and this colouration continues posteriorly into a loop that encircles all of the posterior protuberances. All protuberances are orange. The general body colour is rosy purple.

Distribution

Type locality: Miyoseno-takane of Kameki-syo, Sagami Bay, Japan, with a paratype from the rocky shore around Tōshima near the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory.

Etymology

The specific epithet ornatum (Latin ornatus, "adorned", neuter form) refers to the numerous protuberances and ornate colouration. The genus name Sagaminopteron combines the place name "Sagami" (Sagami Bay) with Greek pteron ("wing").

Remarks

Type species of the genus Sagaminopteron. The monophyly of Sagaminopteron is supported in subsequent Gastropteridae phylogenies.
