Description

A medium-sized aeolid, 21-24 mm in preserved body length. The body is elongate, with the dorsum rounded into low body sides; the broad mid-dorsal area remains bare back to the tail. The body sides bear nine groups of cerata (epinotidia) arranged in oblique rows running posteriorly upwards, each group typically holding 6-12 cerata in a single row. The cerata are conical but in preserved material become strongly knobbly and often entangled. The ground colour of preserved specimens is light milky white on the body, tentacles and rhinophores, while the cerata are dirty greyish-brown with white tips. The foot is rounded in front with a strong rim furrow, the foot tentacles are slender and elongate, and the tail is pointed.

Distribution

Type locality: Pepela Bay on the east coast of Rotti Island, Indonesia. At the time of description the species was known from just two localities in Indonesia (Pepela Bay on Rotti Island and Nahalia Bay on Nusa-Laut Island).

Etymology

The specific epithet sibogae commemorates the Siboga Expedition (1899-1900) — the survey vessel HNLMS Siboga from which the type material was collected.

Remarks

A coral-feeding aeolid that preys on dendrophylliid corals such as Tubastraea.

Animals long figured in Japanese field guides as Phestilla / Tenellia sibogae show differences in external morphology and ecology from Indonesian type-locality material, and are likely to represent a distinct (potentially undescribed) species. Recent revisions of Phestilla have reinstated the coral-feeding clade as a separate genus, but the taxonomic status of the Japanese "sibogae"-like animals remains unresolved.
