Description

A polycerid 30-70 mm in length. The body is limaciform, rising from the front end to the middle (where the branchiae lie) and lowering again to a long pointed tail. The back is smooth and passes into the sides without a line of demarcation. The head is slightly expanded, bearing a pair of conical, perfoliated rhinophores fully retractile within sheaths. The non-retractile branchiae, three in number, are bipinnate and arranged in a posteriorly-open semicircle (five in the largest specimen). The anal papilla lies close behind the branchiae; the genital opening is on the right side about halfway between the head and the branchiae. The foot is linear, ending posteriorly in a pointed tail; the anterior edge is truncated with obtuse corners. The mouth is a circular pore flanked by a fleshy oral tentacle on each side.

The back and sides are deep blue-black, ornamented with orange longitudinal lines. Rhinophores and branchial plumes are black; the sole of the foot is blue-black.

Distribution

Type locality: Ishigaki-shima, Ryukyu Islands, Japan.

Etymology

The specific epithet luteolineata is a Latin compound of luteus ("yellow") and lineatus ("lined"), meaning "yellow-lined", describing the orange-to-dark-yellow longitudinal lines on the blue-black ground.

Remarks

Originally placed in Nembrotha, later transferred via Roboastra to the genus Tyrannodoris. The Japanese name "Ishigaki-ryūgū-umiushi" refers to the type locality, Ishigaki Island.
