Description

Body elongate with a pointed posterior foot. The dorsum is covered with numerous compound tubercles, so that the entire body appears to be composed of tubercles. Each tubercle is elongate, narrowing slightly before flaring into a flat, mushroom-like top from which several spicules project. The rhinophore pockets are very long and consist of two to three tall apical tubercles plus a row of smaller outer tubercles. Ground colour ranges from white to greyish-green and greyish-brown, with scattered blue or brown spots between the tubercles.

Distribution

Reported from Hawaii, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Marshall Islands and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.

Etymology

The specific epithet exeches is from Greek exechos ("jutting out, projecting, prominent"), referring to the prominent compound tubercles on the dorsum.

Remarks

A small sponge-feeding dorid.
