Description

A medium-sized Gymnodoris reaching about 33 mm in length. In life the body is entirely white with bright orange-red round spots scattered over the dorsum, the source of the Japanese vernacular name "Akaboshi-umiushi" ("red-spot sea slug"). In preserved material the colour fades to yellowish-white with sparse yellowish spots. The clavus of the rhinophores carries 15-16 leaves on each side; the oral tentacles are very small. The gill consists of ten strongly contracted bipinnate leaves, with the anal papilla at the centre of the gill circle and the renal pore to its right. The foot is not narrow but scarcely projects at the sides, with a straight anterior edge.

Distribution

Type locality: Burias, Philippines.

Etymology

The Latin adjective alba ("white", feminine) is a descriptive epithet referring to the white ground colour of the body.

Remarks

Originally placed in Trevelyana, later transferred to Gymnodoris.
