Description

Very similar to Hypselodoris maculosa but reliably distinguished by having three (rather than two) coloured rings on the rhinophore club. The body bears scattered fine white and purple spots, especially anteriorly and posteriorly. In the radula, the middle-lateral teeth of H. decorata have only 3-4 denticles versus 4-5 in H. maculosa; the receptaculum seminis lies just below the bursa rather than near the uterine duct (Gosliner & Johnson, 1999).

Distribution

New Caledonia (type locality), Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Malaysia, Marshall Islands.

Etymology

Latin decorata, "adorned, decorated."

Remarks

H. decorata and H. maculosa are sympatric in the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. In the second edition of "Sea Slugs of Japan," the name Hypselodoris yarae is misapplied to this species; true H. yarae lacks the anterior and posterior white spotting.
