A white middorsal line runs from between the rhinophores back to the gill, encircling the branchial opening, and a second white line continues along the midline of the tail.
The rhinophore stalks are the same pale purple as the body, while the clubs are translucent orange.
The gills are pale purple at the base with translucent orange branches.
Body length reaches about 40 mm.

Distribution

Known from Japanese waters, with the type locality at Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula and additional records along the Pacific coast of Honshu.

Etymology

The specific epithet shimodaensis means "from Shimoda", referring to the type locality on the Izu Peninsula of Japan.

Remarks

Described by Kikutaro Baba in 1994 as one of four new, rare, or previously unrecorded Japanese species of Hypselodoris (Venus 53(3): 175-187).
The species was subsequently treated by a 1999 revision in their monograph of Indo-Pacific Hypselodoris and in a molecular revision in their molecular phylogeny of the Chromodorididae, both of which support its current generic placement.
