Description

A small Aglajidae, body length 10-15 mm. The body is elongate and roughly cylindrical, soft, and smooth. The head-shield is slightly larger than the mantle-shield and bluntly pointed posteriorly. Anteriorly the head-shield has three indistinct lobes, the lateral lobes ear-shaped and forming short reduced rhinophores. The mantle-shield has two posterior lobes — the left long and pointed, the right distinctly shorter and rounded. Ground colour glossy purplish-black, densely sprinkled with small to large pale-brown spots over the whole body except the sole. A W-shaped yellow band runs across the anterior end of the head-shield, the posterior end of the head-shield is also yellow, and the lateral lobe margins are yellow.

Distribution

Type locality is Seto, Kii, Wakayama, Japan. The original description records the species from Kii and Izu, with later records extending across the Indo-West Pacific.

Etymology

The specific epithet fulvipunctata is a Latin compound of fulvus (tawny) and punctatus (spotted), meaning "tawny-spotted", referring to the pale-brown spots on the purplish-black ground. The Japanese name "Akaboshi-tsubamegai" (red-star Aglajidae) likens the bright pale-brown spots to red stars.

Remarks

Originally described as Chelidonura fulvipunctata and later transferred to the new genus Biuve under a phylogenetic revision of Aglajidae. Distinguished from other Aglajidae by the distinctive coloration and asymmetric posterior lobes.
