Description

Mantle white with alternating thin black longitudinal lines and broader orange-brown longitudinal bands (typically five black lines and four orange-brown bands). The outer mantle bears a broad, diffuse orange-brown submarginal band. Rhinophores and gills are uniformly orange-brown. The foot has a broad orange-brown marginal band. The mantle is broadly ovate with wide overlap, and up to ten simple gills are arranged in a posteriorly-open horseshoe. Holotype 12 mm preserved; the largest specimens reach 18 mm preserved.

Distribution

Type locality is Granite Head, Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia (10 m depth, October 1979). Originally known only from Lizard Island and Bushy Island on the Great Barrier Reef; subsequent records extend to Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Japan, and the Marshall Islands. Japanese specimens differ slightly in colour pattern from the type material, and have been suggested to represent Chromodoris cf. colemani.

Etymology

The specific epithet colemani honours Neville Coleman of Sydney, the Australian underwater photographer and publisher who, through The Australian Marine Photographic Index, numerous publications and collecting expeditions, made the public aware of Australian sublittoral marine life and supplied much scientific material to museums.

Remarks

Distinguished within the colour group from Chromodoris magnifica and Chromodoris annae by having alternating black AND orange-brown longitudinal markings; the closer relatives bear black lines only.
