Description
Living animals are moderately large, reaching 45 mm in length. The body is whitish to grey-blue. The notum is ornamented with small to large yellow spots and smaller dark blue to black spots scattered over the surface. Areas of blue are present on the notum and sides of the body, and similar spots are found on the sides of the body and foot. The gill pocket is slightly elevated above the notum. Nine to eleven narrow, thin, unipinnate gill branches are held erectly from the gill pocket, with red lines along the inner and outer edges; the central portion of the outer face has several opaque white spots. The base of the gill pocket is red-orange. Rhinophores are red, with an opaque white spot on the inner side of the base and a bright red upper half; rhinophores bear 13-14 lamellae.Distribution
Known from Indonesia and the Philippines.Etymology
Named for Roo, the kangaroo character in A. A. Milne's stories, whose mother is Kanga. This species is named H. roo because it has often been mistaken for H. kanga.Remarks
Hypselodoris roo, together with Hypselodoris confetti, has long been misidentified as Hypselodoris kanga. The two species also have some external similarity to Hypselodoris infucata, but the red pigment pattern on the gill, the position of red along the gill rachis, the rhinophore markings and the arrangement of mantle glands all differ. In the molecular phylogeny H. roo is sister to Hypselodoris zephyra and both are sister to H. confetti. The type locality is Mainit Bubbles, Mabini, Batangas, Philippines.References
