Description

A medium-sized chromodorid, body length about 6 cm and up to 1.7 cm wide. In life the back is brown, mottled with darker patches; the mantle border is encircled by a narrow reddish-brown band edged in white on both sides; the flanks and upper foot are a paler brown; the foot border is white. The rhinophores and gill leaves are brownish-grey with strikingly contrasting white rachides. The rhinophores carry about 35 lamellae on each side; the gill consists of 8 leaves on each side, the rear ends curling inwards in the manner typical of the genus.

Distribution

Type locality: Noordwachter reef off Amboina (Ambon, Indonesia). Widely distributed across the rocky reef habitats of the Indo-West Pacific.

Etymology

The specific epithet rufomarginata is a Latin compound of rufus ("red") and marginatus ("bordered"), meaning "red-bordered" — a clear reference to the narrow reddish-brown band that encircles the mantle.

Remarks

Originally placed in Casella; Casella was later treated as essentially synonymous with Glossodoris, so the species is now placed in Glossodoris. Externally separable from Glossodoris atromarginata, which has a deep blue mantle border.
