Description

In life the body reaches about 6 cm in length, with a body height of around 7 mm. The dorsal ground colour is pale yellowish, overrun by numerous fine dark chestnut-brown longitudinal stripes. On the flanks the stripes coalesce into three nearly continuous lines that run to the base of the tail; between them, scattered short stripes leave the yellow ground showing through. The front edge of the head is reddish-brown, followed by a few reddish-brown transverse stripes. The rhinophore sheaths, oral tentacles, front and lateral foot edges, tail tip and the stalks of the gill leaves are all blue; the gill leaves themselves are mostly reddish-brown. Three tripinnate gill leaves stand in the centre of the back on a broad rachis, with the anal opening in the posterior arc.

Distribution

Type locality: a reef off Saleyer (Selayar Island, south of Sulawesi, Indonesia). Now widely distributed across the tropical Indo-West Pacific in coral reef habitats.

Etymology

The specific epithet lineolata is a Latin compound of lineola ("small line") and -atus ("bearing"), meaning "with fine lines" — a reference to the many fine reddish-brown longitudinal stripes.

Remarks

Feeds on ascidians (tunicates).
