Description

Generally translucent white with a solid darker patch of opaque white covering most of the dorsum and extending onto the head in front of the rhinophores. The white pigment is irregular and does not reach the lateral mantle margins. The digestive gland is greyish brown, resembling oxidised milk chocolate. The base of each ceras is translucent white showing the digestive gland; the medial portion forms a broad opaque white to pale grey band, followed by a band of diffuse dull blue, and a creamy yellow apical tip. Rhinophores thick, conical, slightly longer than the oral tentacles, dark brown with red tones reminiscent of kelp blades. Oral tentacles same colour as rhinophores. Reaches 25 mm in length.

Distribution

Type locality San Miguel, Dauin, Negros Oriental, Philippines. Recorded across the Philippines and Indonesia, with possible records from Queensland (Australia), Thailand, and Tanzania.

Etymology

From the original description (Kim, Donohoo & Gosliner, 2024):
Puti is the Filipino word for white, reflecting the characteristic opaque white patches on the notum of this species. The white triangular patch on the Philippine flag stands for equality.

Remarks

Previously treated as Cuthona yamasui Hamatani, 1993 in misidentification, and figured as Cuthona sp. 13 or Tenellia sp. E / sp. 15 in earlier guides. A 2024 revision found COI divergence of 18.1% and 16S divergence of 12.5% from T. yamasui, establishing it as a distinct species. Found on soft sandy and silty bottoms where it feeds on the hydroid Macrorhynchia balei.
