Description

A mid-sized phyllidiid reaching about 65 mm in length. Body broadly oval, dorsoventrally flattened, with a tuberculate yellowish-cream mantle. The dorsum carries large round yellow tubercles arranged in three to five irregular longitudinal rows, surrounded by a network of fine black lines on a bluish-grey ground. The mantle margin is unbroken and bordered by a black band. Rhinophores yellow, retractile into low pockets near the front of the mantle. Lateral gills lie in a series of lamellae running along both sides between mantle and foot, in classic Phyllidiidae arrangement.

Distribution

Indian Ocean and central / western Pacific. Type locality: "Mer des Indes" (Indian Ocean), based on Péron material from the early 19th-century Baudin expedition.

Etymology

The specific epithet ocellata is the Latin feminine of ocellatus, "marked with eye-spots" (from ocellus, "little eye"), in reference to the conspicuous round yellow tubercles arranged like ocelli on the dorsum.

Remarks

Type species of the genus Phyllidia. Like other phyllidiids, feeds on sponges.
