Description

A medium-sized phyllidiid in which the dorsum bears low, rounded tubercles arranged in fine longitudinal rows on a translucent white to pale-pink background, with thin black longitudinal lines running between the tubercle rows. The rhinophores are black. The mantle edge may show a pale yellow tinge, and the foot is rimmed with a fine pale orange line.

Distribution

The type locality is the Xisha (Paracel) Islands in the South China Sea. The species is recorded across the western Pacific, including Indonesia (Raja Ampat), the Philippines and southern Japan.

Etymology

The specific epithet xishaensis is a Latinised geographical adjective referring to the type locality, the Xisha (Paracel) Islands in the South China Sea.

Remarks

Specimens of this species have often been illustrated under the name Phyllidiopsis striata Bergh, 1888 in field guides, and the relationship between the two names long remained uncertain. Molecular phylogenetic analyses recover this species as a strongly supported sister lineage to Phyllidiopsis krempfi.
