Description

A large platydorid reaching 9 cm in length alive. The dorsum is dark blood-red on a fine black underlying network; the leaves of the rhinophore club are edged with white, and the gill is white with reddish rachidial portions. The branchial opening is bordered by 5 lobes of unequal size, with 6 strong feather-like gill plumes around a slender anal papilla.

Distribution

Type locality: reef of the south island at Saleyer (Saleyer Strait, southern Sulawesi, Indonesia). Also recorded at the time of description from Pulu Sanguisiapo in the Sulu Archipelago and from Ambon.

Etymology

The specific epithet sanguinea is the feminine of the Latin adjective sanguineus ("blood-red, of blood"), a descriptive epithet referring to the dark blood-red dorsal colour recorded in the living animal.

Remarks

Distinguished from the contemporaneously described Platydoris flammulata, with which it might at first be confused.
