Description

Body length about 17-30 mm. The antero-lateral corners of the foot are slightly angulated. The oral tentacles and rhinophores are nearly equal in length, smooth, slender and long. Cerata are arranged in more than 28 oblique rows on each side, with about seven cerata per row. The pericardium shows through the skin in the anterior part of the back. The anterior margin of the foot is grooved transversely. The oral tentacles and rhinophores are vermilion-tinted with white tips; the head and the anterior portion of the back, around the pericardium, are tinged with vermilion either broadly or narrowly. Each ceras is veined with chocolate, with a whitish band beneath a slightly vermilion-tinted tip.

Distribution

Type locality: Takanosima (Takanoshima), Tateyama Bay (Chiba Pref., Japan). Subsequently recorded from various Honshu coasts.

Etymology

The specific epithet takanosimensis is a toponymic adjective formed from "Takanosima" (the type locality) and the Latin suffix -ensis ("from").

Remarks

Long treated as a synonym of Aeolidiella indica, the species was later resurrected on morphological and molecular grounds and reassigned to the genus Anteaeolidiella, establishing the current combination. The Japanese name "Hon-mino-umiushi" applies the broader vernacular "Mino-umiushi" to this species.
