Description

A medium-sized Dorididae, holotype body length 35 mm (live). Body elliptical to slightly elongate-oval and soft. The dorsum is covered with close-set rounded tubercles that appear granular and vary in size; unlike Doris nodulosa, the median part of the dorsum is not naked. Rhinophoral sheaths each with two valves. Six tripinnate gills, the posteriormost on each side bifid. Gill-cavity with a tuberculate margin. Oral tentacles digitate.

Distribution

Type locality: Seto, Kii (Wakayama Pref., Japan); type material also from Seto (Kii), Sagami Bay (Nishino-zaki, Arazaki and Karigaya-zaki near Nagai) and Boso, Chiba (Kominato). Subsequently recorded from the Philippines and Hawaii.

Etymology

The most distinctive character of the species is the structure of the first lateral tooth, which bears a bifid tip; the specific name bifurcata ("two-pronged") is taken from this feature.

Remarks

Externally similar to Doris nodulosa and Doris pustulata, but distinguished by the bifid first lateral tooth. Subsequently transferred to Hoplodoris, but currently accepted as Carminodoris on WoRMS.
