Description

Body slender and elongate, reaching about 30 mm in length. Ground colour black, with finely traced longitudinal yellow to whitish lines densely arranged along the dorsum; the outermost lines connect anterior to the rhinophores and posterior to the gills, forming a closed loop. The mantle margin is bordered by an orange to scarlet line, and the foot margin is also orange. Rhinophores and gills are red and sprinkled with fine white dots. Rare individuals lacking the black ground pigment appear white.

Distribution

Western Pacific. Records include Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan and Palau. The type locality is Anyer Bay (Anjer-baai), west Java, Sunda Strait, Indonesia.

Etymology

The specific epithet lineolata is the Latin diminutive of lineata ("lined") and means "finely lined". Van Hasselt's diagnosis describes the body as "colore nigro flavoque angustissime lineolata" — very finely lineated with black and yellow.

Remarks

Originally described as Doris lineolata by van Hasselt in his Java mollusc letter (Bulletin des Sciences Naturelles et de Géologie, vol. 1: 238, 1824), based on material from Anyer Bay in the Sunda Strait. Van Hasselt characterised the species as "satis vulgaris" (rather common). Subsequently transferred to the genus Chromodoris Alder & Hancock, 1855.
