Description

A small (2–4 mm) cephalaspidean with a striking pigmentation pattern. The body is dark brown to blackish-brown with an internal shell. Round yellow patches edged with white sit slightly raised on the mantle, evoking "fried eggs" — the source of the species' English common name fried egg sea slug. The processes at the front of the cephalic shield and the tail are dark brown above and white below.

Distribution

The type locality is Tanzania (Brown 1979). The species is widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, with records from the Red Sea, Madagascar, Mozambique, Japan (e.g. Kerama Islands, Okinawa), Guam, Hawaii, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Christmas Island.

Etymology

The specific epithet thompsoni honours the late Dr. Thompson.
