Description

A medium-sized Gymnodoris. The living animal is entirely white throughout. The body is the standard gymnodorid type; the rhinophore club bears about 15 thin lamellae and the gill comprises 12 leaves. Preserved specimens reach 2.5 cm in length, 0.8 cm in height and width; gill leaves up to 2.5 mm high; foot up to 4 mm wide.

Distribution

Type locality: the Japanese sea. Subsequently recorded across the Indo-West Pacific in shallow rocky-reef and sandy-bottom habitats.

Etymology

The Latin inornatus (feminine inornata) is the privative in- + ornatus ("adorned"), meaning "without ornament, unadorned" — referring to the entirely white, unmarked body.

Remarks

Originally placed in Trevelyana, the species was subsequently transferred to Gymnodoris, establishing the current combination. Gymnodoris is the type genus of the family Gymnodorididae; like other members of the family, this species is a carnivorous predator of other sea slugs.
