Description

Body length 9-15 mm. Background colour green, with abundant irregular green pigment spots covered by anastomosing opaque white blotches over much of the parapodia. The parapodial margin is pale cream to light yellow with a series of opaque white spots inside the marginal band. The head is opaque white mixed with green, the green extending onto the basal third of the rhinophores. The rest of the rhinophore is opaque white, with the apex burnt orange. The anterior margin of the foot and front of the head also bear opaque white pigment. The inside of each parapodium shows, from margin to centre: a cream marginal line, an opaque white band, a broader black band, and a green region with yellow-green longitudinal lines.

Distribution

Hawaiian Islands, Enewetak and Kwajelin (Marshall Islands), Guam, Western Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Madagascar. Specimens recorded as Elysia gracilis in 1978 by Carlson and Hoff are referable to this species.

Etymology

The specific epithet carlsoni honours Clay Carlson, a long-time student of Thuridilla based in Guam who, together with Patty Jo Hoff, first discovered this species.

Remarks

This is one of the least derived members of the genus, retaining mostly plesiomorphic features. The only autapomorphic character is the broad radular teeth bearing 35-38 fine evenly-spaced denticles along each side of the cutting margin. Thuridilla carlsoni is most closely related morphologically to Thuridilla multimarginata, and is also similar to Thuridilla flavomaculata and Thuridilla kathae, but is distinguished from the latter two by green pigment reticulated with white (vs solid green) and by broader radular teeth.
