Description

Mantle ground colour white to pale yellow with several black longitudinal stripes; the mantle margin is yellow. Resembles Hypselodoris zephyra but differs in lacking white speckling on the rhinophores and gill.

Distribution

Western Indian Ocean, from Tanzania to the Red Sea. The type locality is East Africa / Zanzibar.

Etymology

The specific epithet nigrostriata (Latin, "black-striped") refers to the black longitudinal stripes on the mantle.

Remarks

Originally described as Chromodoris nigrostriata Eliot, 1904 in "On some nudibranchs from East Africa and Zanzibar, part IV" (Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond.). Specimens illustrated as H. nigrostriata in two well-known Japanese field guides bear white speckles on the rhinophores and are now considered to be H. zephyra.
