Description

Ground colour ranges from dark brown to dark blue. The lateral parapodia and the posterior margin of the cephalic shield are outlined in blue. Some specimens carry white blotches on the anterior or posterior portion of the cephalic shield. Similar to Philinopsis cyanea but distinguished by a rounded head and a non-raised posterior cephalic margin. Generally reaches 35 mm, with records up to 50 mm from Okinawa.

Distribution

Widespread across the Indian Ocean and western Pacific. The type locality is the Maldive-Laccadive Archipelago (Gardiner expedition, 1899-1900).

Etymology

Named in honour of J. Stanley Gardiner, the Cambridge zoologist who led the 1899-1900 expedition to the Maldive and Laccadive Archipelagoes and supplied Eliot with the type material.

Remarks

Originally described as Doridium gardineri Eliot, 1903 in the Proceedings of the Malacological Society of London. Transferred from Philinopsis to Tubulophilinopsis by Zamora-Silva & a 2018 revision.
