Description

A mid-sized aglajid reaching about 40-50 mm. Body pale brown to grey, with numerous fine dark brown transverse lines running across the dorsum. The anterior tip of the head-shield and the posterior tip of the dorsal shield are tinged indigo blue. A prominent bump on the head houses a long, tubular buccal bulb. The shell is internal, rudimentary, flat and triangular. Lives in sand, into which it burrows.

Distribution

Indo-West Pacific tropical waters. Originally described from Australia.

Etymology

The specific epithet lineolata is the Latin for "finely lined" (diminutive of lineata), in reference to the numerous fine dark transverse lines that cross the dorsum.

Remarks

Members of the Aglajidae are carnivorous, preying mainly on other cephalaspideans. Tubulophilinopsis lineolata belongs to a group of aglajids characterised by a long tubular buccal bulb; while related species in the group feed on bubble-shell snails such as Bulla and Haminoea, the specific prey of T. lineolata has not been documented.
