Description

Ground color cream to pale yellow, with the most distinctive identification feature being a thin black line bordering the mantle margin. The mantle is smooth and slightly undulating, and the body sides may appear semi-translucent. Rhinophores and gills are yellowish-white, matching the body color, and the gill leaves are also edged with a fine black line. Body length reaches up to about 100 mm.

Distribution

Type locality is Timor Island. Widely distributed across tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West and central Pacific, with records from the Red Sea, East Africa, South Africa, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Hawaii, and the Society Islands. Common on coral reef habitats.

Etymology

From Latin ater (black) and marginatus (bordered), referring to the thin black line bordering the mantle margin.

Remarks

It feeds on sponges and is one of the most commonly encountered chromodorids on Indo-West Pacific coral reefs.
