Description

Mantle white with scattered yellow spots and an irregular row of purple spots along the margin. Each gill leaflet is red except for a white outer rim, with a red rachis. The gill is reddish translucent.

Distribution

New Caledonia (type locality of Chromodoris variata), Australia, Japan, and elsewhere in the western Pacific.

Etymology

Latin variata, "varied, mottled."

Remarks

Originally described as Chromodoris variata Risbec, 1928. Long treated as conspecific with Goniobranchus aureopurpureus, but recent molecular work has shown Australian material to be genetically distinct from G. aureopurpureus; treated here as Goniobranchus cf. variatus, a candidate combination resurrected from Risbec's name.
