Description

A chromodorid reaching about 45 mm in body length. Ground colour is white to ivory, the mantle margin outlined with a very fine white line. The rhinophores and gill are yellow, often tinted reddish-purple at the base, although colouration varies regionally and many individuals are uniformly yellow without the basal tint.

The body is smooth and shows the typical flattened-oval shape of chromodorids.

Distribution

Widely distributed across the western, southern and central Pacific. Records come from New Caledonia, eastern Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan (south of central Honshū) and the Marshall Islands. It occurs on shallow to moderately deep coral and rocky reefs.

Etymology

The specific epithet bullockii appears to honour a person named Bullock who was associated with the original describer, Collingwood 1881.

Remarks

"Hadairo-umiushi" (Hypselodoris cf. bullockii) is treated as a regional variant of this species and is now considered a junior synonym. The species is sponge-feeding, with Dysidea reported as its main prey.
