Description

Body background a vivid blue, with the mantle margin edged in yellow. A single yellow longitudinal line runs along the dorsal midline, flanked by additional yellow spots or short streaks. The yellow markings are highly variable: dots, dashes, broken lines, occasionally absent, and sometimes overlaid with irregular black blotches. Rhinophores are orange; the gills are white with orange axes. Reaches about 30 mm in length.

Distribution

Type locality: Tsushima, Korea Strait. Distributed along the coasts of East Asia, including Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu), Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. In Japan, recorded as far north as Asamushi, Aomori Prefecture and southwards through the main islands.

Etymology

The specific epithet festiva is Latin for "festive" or "festal," alluding to the bright, festive coloration of yellow lines and spots on a blue ground.

Remarks

Like other members of the genus, this species feeds on sponges, particularly dictyoceratid sponges of the genus Dysidea. Hypselodoris festiva is one of the most familiar and commonly encountered nudibranchs along the Japanese coast, occurring year-round on rocky shores and shallow subtidal cobble habitats.
