Branchial gills translucent white to yellow with violet rachides.

Distribution

Indian Ocean and western Pacific.

Etymology

The specific epithet mariei is the Latin genitive of the surname "Marie", honouring the collector of the type material from New Caledonia.

Remarks

Records once labelled Mexichromis macropus ("スミレウミウシ") in Japanese field guides are now considered colour variants of M. mariei; the two species can be separated by the continuity of the orange mantle border, which is interrupted in M. macropus. The species has also frequently been confused with Mexichromis festiva (Angas, 1864), but the latter is regarded as endemic to Australia. The Japanese name "クリヤイロウミウシ" was proposed in a study of two Japanese Mexichromis species, named after the locality Kuriya on the Echizen Coast.
