Hypselodoris perii Gosliner & R. F. Johnson, 2018

Description

Living animals are large, reaching 35 mm in length. The body is translucent white with a wine-red medial line and scattered, elongate wine-red oval markings surrounded by diffuse purple pigment. A wide yellow to yellow-orange marginal band is present along the entire mantle margin. A wine-red ring encircles the base of the gill sheath. The translucent white foot is ornamented with wine-red spots having larger areas of purple surrounding them. Eight unipinnate gill branches have a translucent white base and bright red-orange pigment on apical surfaces and outer margin. Perfoliate rhinophores are uniformly bright red-orange with about 17 densely arranged lamellae.

Distribution

Known only from Bali, Indonesia and Batangas, Philippines, from deep reefs.

Etymology

Named for Peri Paleracio, a dive guide and good friend of the authors who found the first specimen of this species in the Philippines.

Remarks

Hypselodoris perii is the only species with an elongate medial reddish line and reddish oval markings. The most similar species is Hypselodoris dollfusi (Pruvot-Fol, 1933), which lacks the medial longitudinal line and has narrow red rings with purple pigment inside, rather than wine-red ovals surrounded by diffuse purple. H. dollfusi is restricted to the Arabian Sea, whereas H. perii is known only from Bali and the Philippines. In the molecular phylogeny H. perii is sister to a large clade that includes members of the Hypselodoris obscura, Hypselodoris capensis, Hypselodoris kaname and Hypselodoris maritima clades. The type locality is Mainit Bubbles, Mabini, Batangas, Luzon, Philippines, 40 m depth.
