Description

The ground colour of the body is white. The mantle margin is bordered by a double line — yellow on the outer edge and reddish-purple inside. The reddish-purple line varies in thickness and often breaks into a row of irregular blotches. A single white longitudinal line runs along the dorsal midline from between the rhinophores to just in front of the gills, flanked on both sides by an orange-red band. Some individuals show additional orange-red spots scattered between the mantle edge and the median line. The rhinophores are orange-red, and the gill plumes are white with orange-red edging on each leaf. Animals grow to about 50 mm in length.

Distribution

Widely distributed across the western Pacific, including Japan (type locality), the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand.

Etymology

Named after the colour of the young leaves of kaname-mochi (Japanese photinia, Photinia glabra). The vivid red flush of its early-spring foliage echoes the orange-red bands that border the mantle of this nudibranch.

Remarks

Hypselodoris koumacensis, described by Rudman 1995 from New Caledonia, was placed as a junior subjective synonym of this species by a 1999 revision in their monograph of the genus Hypselodoris. The Japanese vernacular name Kaname-iro-umiushi was proposed in the original description.
