Description
Ground colour highly variable - vermilion, orange or brown. The dorsum carries scattered greyish-brown blotches and a strongly raised mid-dorsal ridge bearing a single crater-like pit. Rhinophore stalks translucent; lamellae the colour of the body. Gill leaves match the body colour and bear greyish-brown speckles. Reportedly feeds on sponges. Reaches 50 mm in length.Distribution
Indo-West Pacific: South Africa, Madagascar, Tanzania, Aldabra, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan. The type locality is Prison Island (Changuu), Zanzibar harbour, Tanzania.Etymology
The specific epithet tuberculata (Latin, "bearing tubercles") refers to the prominent raised ridge and crater-like pit on the dorsum.Remarks
Described by Eliot 1904 in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London as the type species of the genus Sclerodoris. The genus and species were revised by Rudman 1978 in "The dorid opisthobranch genera Halgerda Bergh and Sclerodoris Eliot from the Indo-West Pacific".References
