Description

Body 4–6 mm long, elongate and convex, lacking a notal margin. The notum bears short rounded tubercles unevenly distributed over the surface. Oral tentacles are long and pointed; the rhinophores are short and stout with five lamellae and elongate pointed apices. The curved extra-rhinophoral appendages are long compared with the rhinophores. Gill is composed of many finely branched, finely pinnate branches. Extra-branchial appendages are paddle-shaped and curved, similar in size to the extra-rhinophoral appendages.
The body is cream yellow with dense brown pigment patches punctuated with cream spots. The colour of the anterior foot tentacles could not be determined. Oral tentacles have cream-coloured bases with light brown blotches and brown tips. Extra-rhinophoral and extra-branchial appendages are cream yellow at the base, white on the paddles with a blue diagonal band midway. The rhinophores are tan-brown and the gill leaves are a slightly lighter shade of tan.

Distribution

Philippines (type locality: Maricaban Island, Batangas), Indonesia and central Japan.

Etymology

Verbatim from the original description (Gosliner & Fahey, 2008, p.66):
The specific name palmula is taken from the Latin word meaning the 'blade of an oar'. This describes the unique shape of the extra-rhinophoral and extra-branchial appendages on this species.

Remarks

Described as one of 16 new Indo-Pacific Trapania species in Gosliner, T.M. & Fahey, S.J. 2008 Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 152: 53-111. Synonymies listed at the start of the description include Trapania sp. 2 Watanabe (Umiushi), Trapania sp. 5 Rudman (SeaSlug Forum) and Trapania sp. 5 Nakano 2004 (p.66).
