Description

A small cephalaspidean reaching about 8 mm in shell length. The shell is oval, contracted posteriorly, thin, fragile, pellucid and white. The aperture is slightly dilated at the base, and the apex is perforate. The shell carries transverse raised lines (sculptural striae) only at both extremities, the central portion being smooth. Pease's type-material is from Cuming's collection of Sandwich Islands shells.

Distribution

Indo-Pacific. Type locality: Sandwich Islands (Hawaiian Islands), based on specimens in the Cuming collection described by Pease. Subsequently recorded from the Hawaiian Islands, southern Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, the Red Sea and elsewhere.

Etymology

The specific epithet combines Latin semi- ("half") with striatus ("furrowed, lined"), meaning "half-striated" or "striated in part", in reference to the sculptural striae confined to the two ends of the shell. Pease did not state an etymology.

Remarks

Placed by Pease in Atys, where it is still currently retained. Pease originally used the feminine ending Atys semistriata; in current use the masculine combination Atys semistriatus is preferred. The Japanese name "コクテンタマゴガイ" refers to the small dark spots scattered on the shell surface.
