Description

A small sacoglossan reaching about 5 mm in length. Head black except around the eyes — the diagnostic character. Body ground colour yellowish green, deepening towards the outer surface of the parapodia and the tip of the tail; parapodial margin white.

Distribution

Type locality: Tannowa, Osaka Bay, Japan. Recorded along the Japanese coast and from Hong Kong and Korea, on intertidal to shallow subtidal rocky shores and in tide pools.

Etymology

The specific epithet combines Latin niger ("black") and caput ("head"), referring to the species' distinctive black head. The Japanese vernacular name Izumi-midorigai refers to Izumi (和泉) Province, the historical district containing the type locality.

Remarks

A sacoglossan that practises kleptoplasty, retaining functional chloroplasts from its algal food.
