Description

A very small aglajid, body length about 15 mm, with a body shape resembling that of Chelidonura hirundinina. Ground colour blackish-purple, with white fine dots densely scattered on the outer faces of the parapodia and on the dorsum, except on the head-shield surface and the mantle dorsum, which lack white dots. A broad white curved band runs along the anterior margin of the head-shield, with both ends turning yellow. The outer edges of both parapodia are white.

Distribution

Type locality is Hayama-Koiso, Sagami Bay (intertidal, September 1940, single specimen). The original description records the species from Sagami Bay and from the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands.

Etymology

The specific epithet inornata is Latin for unadorned. The original description does not give an explicit etymology paragraph; the descriptive sense contrasts with the brightly tri-coloured Chelidonura hirundinina.

Remarks

Originally described as Chelidonura inornata and later transferred to Mariaglaja (following the 2018 Aglajidae phylogenetic revision by Zamora-Silva & Malaquias). The Japanese name "Ohaguro-tsubamegai" likens the blackish-purple ground colour to traditional Japanese tooth-blackening dye.
