Description

The living animal is about 4.3 cm in length and approximately 1 cm wide. The anterior shield is punctate brownish-grey with a yellow front edge and white lateral edging; the outer face of the parapodial flaps is punctate grey with a white border; the posterior shield is coloured like the anterior shield; the posterior flaps are bright yellow. The corners of the anterior shield do not project; the posterior shield strongly overhangs the tail. The posterior flaps are flattened and slightly pointed, the left almost twice as long as the right. The gill consists of about 8 composite leaves, with roughly its posterior half projecting freely.

Distribution

Type locality: a reef off Saleyer (Selayar Island, south of Sulawesi, Indonesia). Now widely known across coral reef habitats of the Indo-West Pacific.

Etymology

The Latin adjective amoenus (feminine amoena) means "pleasant, lovely, charming"; the descriptive epithet refers to the bright colour pattern (yellow front edge and white lateral edging on the anterior shield, broader white edging on the posterior shield, and bright yellow posterior flaps).

Remarks

The genus name Chelidonura is a compound of Greek chelidōn ("swallow") and oura ("tail"), referring to the elongate, asymmetrical, swallow-tail-like posterior flaps. Like other Aglajidae, Chelidonura amoena is a carnivorous predator of flatworms (Platyhelminthes) on sand bottoms.
