Description

A medium-sized chromodorid up to about 30 mm in length. The body is yellow, with the dorsum usually red (some specimens entirely yellow). The red area is densely sprinkled with small white spots and white-centred ocellate markings, becoming sparser at the centre of the mantle. The outermost edge of the mantle is bordered by a series of fine blue, violet, and yellow lines — a distinctive multi-band margin. The rhinophores are lamellate, red with dense white speckling, and bear a white longitudinal line in front of the lamellae. The gill plume is also red with white markings.

Distribution

Widespread on tropical to subtropical coral reefs across the Indo-West Pacific and the central Pacific. Type locality: Huahine, Society Islands (north-west of Tahiti). Records range from South Africa, Tanzania, the Seychelles, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Japan, and the Hawaiian Islands.

Etymology

The specific epithet albopunctatus is a compound of Latin albus ("white") and punctatus ("spotted"), meaning "white-spotted", in reference to the dense white dotting that ornaments the red dorsum. The Japanese vernacular name "Homura-iro-umiushi" alludes to the bright red dorsum, which evokes the colour of flame (homura).
